Well, it’s official. DrinkLocalWine.com’s 2013 conference will be in Maryland next April 12-14. This will be our fifth annual conference in which we introduce bloggers and other wine writers to the wines of a particular state, one they probably don’t think of as producing great wine.
Maryland now has about 55 wineries, up from a mere 12 in 2000. Not only are the wineries increasing in number, but the quality of wines is improving dramatically too. Our previous conferences have been in Texas, Virginia, Missouri and Colorado – states that have established wine industries that are seeking national recognition. Maryland has some history in promoting hybrid varieties, which we will certainly explore next April, but its modern wine history has been more problematic and sketchy.
That’s one reason I’m even more excited about DLW13 being in Maryland: We will be exploring a wine region just at it emerges to seek recognition. Whether we’re sipping seyval blanc or cabernet sauvignon, DLW13 should be a terrific introduction to Maryland’s budding and exciting wine industry.
I hope you will join us.
